Dame Esther Rantzen’s Daughter Provides Heartbreaking Health Update Amid Her Terminal Cancer Battle

Dame Esther Rantzen’s daughter, Rebecca Wilcox, has shared an emotional update on her mother’s health, following her terminal cancer diagnosis.

In 2023, Dame Esther revealed her lung cancer was at stage four. Despite the devastating news, she remained in high spirits, continuing her support for the assisted dying bill. However, during an appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on February 27, Rebecca opened up about the difficult reality they are now facing as a family.

“We Live in Denial About Everything”

When asked by host Kate Garraway how the family was coping, Rebecca candidly shared the emotional toll: “As a family, we’re great. Because we live in denial about everything. I mean, who has cancer? No one has cancer. But obviously, seriously, it’s a really weird time. As anybody who knows – or has got someone they adore – who has a terminal diagnosis, you just live in a state of anxiety between the scans.”

Palliative Care: “Mum Is Incredible”

Rebecca confirmed that Dame Esther’s treatment has now stopped working, and her condition is now considered “palliative.” With tears in her eyes, Rebecca praised her mother’s strength: “Mum is incredible. I don’t know how she’s doing it. She is surviving not only the cancer, but the treatments as well. She is now obviously palliative. The treatments have stopped working. And she is still going.”

Rebecca also shared that Dame Esther was deeply frustrated by the likelihood that the assisted dying bill would run out of time. Responding to a question from co-host Ranvir Singh about whether Dame Esther would consider going abroad for assisted death, Rebecca confirmed, “Absolutely. We are in this privileged position, whereby she can afford to have the death that she wants and deserves. She will pay £15,000 to go to Dignitas. She will go before she has to. She will go months before she would die here. And she will have to go alone.”

Focusing on Family in the Final Stages

In recent years, Dame Esther has withdrawn from the public eye to focus on her cancer treatment. The update comes after she spent Christmas early with her family last year, fearing she wouldn’t make it to the actual holiday. Last year, she also announced that she had stopped receiving cancer treatment, stating, “Right now, I am not receiving any treatment, which was my doctor’s decision. The side effects outweigh the benefits. So, the cancers are progressing. But according to my most recent scan, very slowly.”

As Dame Esther continues her courageous fight, her family remains by her side, navigating the challenges of her terminal diagnosis with resilience and love.
