For more than seven years, Tim Davies made a life out of being somewhere else.
One morning he might be waking up in a regional Australian town. The next, he could be thousands of kilometres away, delivering the weather live from somewhere audiences would otherwise only see on a map.
There were early starts, endless airports, hotel rooms and more than 900 flights.
But somewhere along that extraordinary journey, something happened that had nothing to do with the weather.
Tim Davies met the person who would change what home meant to him.
And now, as the beloved Today weather presenter prepares to step away from the breakfast show, that old love story gives his decision to slow down a quietly personal dimension.
A career built on the road
Tim joined Today in 2019, bringing with him more than two decades of experience across Australian television and radio.
Before Nine, he worked with the Seven Network, including Sunrise, Weekend Sunrise and The Morning Show, and spent years travelling around Australia and overseas covering major events.
But Today took that travelling life to another level.
For seven years, Tim became one of the familiar faces viewers associated with the show’s weather and travel segments — often reporting from the heart of communities rather than from a studio.
He went skydiving, bungee jumping, abseiling, swam with sharks and crocodiles, raced performance cars and threw himself into countless live television challenges.
Nine says he has clocked up more than 900 flights during his time on the program.
It was an extraordinary way to work.
And, eventually, an exhausting way to live.
Then came the meeting he never expected
Long before Tim announced his departure, he had spoken about one unexpected consequence of his Today career.
In a 2022 interview with 9Honey, he reflected on how the role had changed his life in a way he never anticipated.
He had been living “out of a suitcase”, constantly travelling for work.
Yet that very lifestyle led him to meet his life partner.
“Today has brought me many things,” Tim said at the time, explaining that he never expected the weather role to lead him to the person who would become his partner.
It was a chance meeting — one that quietly changed the direction of his personal life.
Tim, a self-described Sydney native, later left the harbour city and moved north to Brisbane with his partner.
Nine also documented a reunion between the couple after they had been separated during Queensland’s lockdown period.
It was a remarkably simple story, but perhaps that is what makes it so meaningful.
The job that kept Tim moving from place to place had unexpectedly introduced him to the person who gave him somewhere to return to.
From “out of a suitcase” to putting down roots
That detail feels particularly poignant now.
When Nine announced Tim’s departure from Today, the network described him as having spent seven years “living out of a suitcase” and said it fully supported his decision to “lay down some roots”.
Tim himself said the time had come to “step back”, enjoy a sleep-in, take a break without a camera crew and prepare for whatever his next adventure might be.
There was no suggestion that his partner was the reason for his departure.
Tim has not said he is leaving television for love, nor has Nine presented his decision that way.
Instead, the connection is more subtle.
After years of constant movement, the idea of slowing down — of having a little more time, a little more stability and a chance to enjoy life away from the relentless television schedule — carries a different weight when you remember the person he met along the way.
