hta.“FUEL STILL SURPLUS?”: Keir Starmer prepares to prove it amid growing doubts

Sir Keir Starmer is expected to outline a strategy to deal with the skyrocketing cost of living crisis later this morning as the Iran war continues to see the price of oil soar

Keir Starmer is preparing to urgently address the nation as the cost of living crisis hits a boiling point. The Iran war has led to Brits facing a £100 bill just to fill up their cars as Tehran’s blockade on the Strait of Hormuz continues to send oil prices soaring.

Families with a 55-litre diesel car can now expect a £100 bill to fill up at the pump as fuel prices hit their highest since December 2022. The Prime Minister is expected to deliver his address later this morning as he faces pressure to ease the worst of the cost of living crisis.

Conservative shadow chancellor Mel Stride said his party “will get Britain drilling in the North Sea, cut bills by £200, lower taxes, and deliver a stronger economy and a stronger country”. It comes as US President Donald Trump said countries like the UK should secure the Strait of Hormuz themselves.

He said it’s because “the USA won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us”. In a post on Truth Social, he suggested that countries like the UK should build up the “courage” to go to the strait of Hormuz and “just take” fuel.

“You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the USA won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us,” Trump said as he criticised countries who “refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran”. He said these countries could buy “jet fuel” from the US, where there is “plenty”, if they are running low on supplies.

“Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!” Trump concluded his social media post by saying.

In the latest sign that his Middle East campaign has severely damaged long-standing relationships, Mr Trump suggested its allies will “have to start learning how to fight for yourself”.

Meanwhile, the UK’s average price of diesel has reached 182.8p per litre, up 40p since the start of the conflict in the Middle East, the RAC said.

Sir Keir Starmer will chair a meeting of the Cobra crisis committee as the cost to households from the war in Iran was laid bare.

Average energy bills are forecast to rise by almost £300 from July while motorists are already counting the cost of the war, with drivers paying £544 million extra for fuel since the US-Israeli bombing campaign began.
