Dave Hughes sports several bandages in video after having five skin cancers removed
Fresh out of surgery with 45 stitches across his body, Dave Hughes has revealed his latest health ordeal in an Instagram video.’
Aussie comedian Dave Hughes has revealed he underwent surgery to remove five cancerous lesions on his body.
The TV and radio personality shared his health update on Instagram on Thursday, revealing that he was fresh out of hospital that morning and sill sporting 45 stitches to cover his wounds.
“What’s 45 stitches between friends,” he captioned a video of himself shirtless with bandages on his shoulder, forearm, chest and back while on a suburban Melbourne street.
“Dad, what happened to you?” one of his children could be heard asking while filming their famous father.
“I had five skin cancers cut off today,” he replied, while saying the show must go on and he was on his way to the next stop of his Cooked stand-up tour.
“I’m going to Cowes [in Philip Island, Victoria], it’s a two-and-a-half-hour drive away. I’ve got a gig there tonight and the people need me,” he replied.
“I’ve got to be there, they need me … if I don’t go they don’t have fun and I don’t get paid.”
The 55-year-old then put his shirt on and jumped into his car, seemingly off to the gig, as he added a text overlay on the video that read: “The show must go on.”
Hughes has sadly been affected by cancer before with his mum, Carmel, dying from breast cancer in 2023 following a long battle, and his dad, Des, passing away from prostate cancer in 2010. The comedian has also previously had two lesions removed in 2017 and again in 2021.
“I got my skin checked and had a couple of cancers cut out. There were parts that had to be sliced and diced, but I’m all good,” he told the Herald Sun back in 2021. “If you get skin cancers cut out early, it doesn’t lead to other things.”
He then joked that his skin was just too sensitive for the harsh Aussie sun.
“My skin is not meant for this climate. I always joke I should be in Ireland picking potatoes,” he said.
“My wife is always banging on at me about getting my skin checked. She wants to keep me alive, which is nice.”
