Richard Wilkins beams into Australia’s living rooms live each morning on Today, but it was a pre-recorded gaffe that had the journalist asking if someone could “edit it out”.
The Nine entertainment editor and son Christian Wilkins left Tipping Point Australia host Todd Woodbridge speechless after an embarrassing misunderstanding with thousands of dollars on the line.
It was a family affair on the Tipping Point Australia Celebrity Families special, pitting the pair against The Floor host Rodger Corser and daughter Zipporah and Today Extra co-host Sylvia Jeffreys and sister Claire against each other to win money for their charities.
As the battle heated up, Todd asked the Wilkins duo a tough question – to name the three South American countries that begin with a vowel – only to be left scratching his head over their answer.
“We’ll go with Brazil, Chile and Venezuela,” Dickie said.
Baffled, Todd asked Sylvia and Claire if they would’ve answered the same.
“No, we would have gone with the ones that start with a vowel,” Claire savagely replied.
It was only then that Richard and Christian realised their mistake.
Of course it was incorrect, but Todd technically had to wait until the machine gave its answer and of course, it soon flashed up red.
“I can’t understand why,” the host joked.
The pair could not believe the embarrassing mistake.
“Can we edit that part out?” Dickie wondered.
Evidently, they could not!
As the duo made it through to the final round, Todd couldn’t help but make another jab.
“Who’d have believed it that you’d be standing here,” he said.
“Not us,” Dickie replied.
“Nor anyone watching,” added Christian.
They were confident about winning some major cash for their charity Inala, which provides support to individuals with disability – on one condition.
“Could you avoid South American questions, please?” Dickie asked.
Luckily for them, the continent did not come up again – allowing the father and son to earn an incredible $13,500 win for Inala.
