EXCLUSIVE: Woman spends $37,000 on engagement ring to marry herself after a string of bad relationships and recent divorce: ‘I’m the only person I trust’
An adult content creator has claimed she is so tired of ‘being disappointed by men’ that she has decided to marry herself in Ibiza.
Bonnie Locket tells Daily Mail she will be holding the ceremony on May 29 and says she splashed £20,000 (AU$37,505) on a custom engagement ring for herself.
She says she will also be wearing the custom £15,000 (AU$28,128) Galia Lahav wedding dress she first wore when she married her ex-husband.
‘I found myself in a position where I’m 38 years old and I’ve been disappointed by so many men,’ Bonnie says.
‘There are so many women out there like me that have been disappointed by men and they get to this ripe old age of not having children.
‘The body clock’s running out, and we’re not married or settled down. We’re just on our own.’
‘I feel like, if I’m going to be on my own, I’m going to make an absolute statement about it. I can’t disappoint myself. This can’t end in divorce,’ she continues.
As for what her loved ones think, Bonnie explains it took some time to get them on board with her sologamy plans.
‘At first they thought I’d completely lost my mind, which I expected. But once I explained it, they realised it’s actually the most honest thing I’ve ever done,’ she says.
‘I’ve spent years being chosen, unchosen, messed around… and I’m just done with that cycle. I told them I’m not waiting around to be someone’s maybe anymore.
‘I’m choosing myself, publicly, unapologetically, and setting a new standard for how I expect to be treated.’
Bonnie says she decided to marry herself after she experienced a string of relationships that ended in heartbreak.
One of those relationships saw her stay with her partner for 11 years before their union later fell apart after nine months of marriage.
‘I don’t quite know how I survived that, to be honest with you,’ she reveals.
‘It was like my whole world disappeared and then I was kind of just left to fend for myself. It was either fight or flight.’
Hoping for a fresh start, Bonnie moved to Ibiza with a new partner, only to find history repeating itself.
After putting down a non-refundable deposit of €85,000 (AU$137,656) on a house they intended to share, the pair had a similar falling out.
Faced with the choice of returning to the UK or staying in a foreign country alone in the house she had bought for a shared dream, Bonnie chose herself.
‘I’m 38 years old on my own in a foreign country in a house that I bought for me and my ex, but honestly, I’ve never felt better,’ she says.
‘I’m a full human on my own and I’m so proud of myself.’
The upcoming wedding is set to be a high-end affair, she says, with the blonde beauty planning to wear her old wedding dress.
She says her custom-made gown has remained shoved in a suitcase since her divorce seven months ago.
By wearing it to marry herself, she hopes to transform the garment from a symbol of heartbreak into one of positive self-empowerment.
‘It is my dream wedding dress,’ she explains.
‘I want to change the meaning of that dress because it meant so much to me and it was something I’ve wanted since I was a little girl.
‘I had the dream wedding before, but it all goes to show it doesn’t matter how much money you have or how much you spend on a wedding, none of that matters.
‘I think I’m the only person I would trust with that vow.’
Bonnie goes on to say ‘this is probably the least nervous I’ve ever been about a commitment’.
‘I’ve been more anxious walking into relationships with men than I am marrying myself. That says everything,’ she says.
‘This feels certain, grounded, and entirely on my terms, which is something I’ve never really had before.’
The ceremony will be attended by a close-knit group of friends who have supported Bonnie through her transition from heartbreak to independence.
As she prepares to walk down the aisle alone, she hopes her story serves as a beacon for other women struggling with the pressure to find ‘the one’.
Nevertheless, Bonnie assures that she has not given up on the idea of falling in love with someone else.
‘I haven’t given up on love at all, I’ve just completely changed the rules. I’m not divorcing myself for anyone,’ she says.
‘If someone comes into my life, they’re not replacing me, they’re joining me. And they’ll have to meet a much higher standard than anything I’ve accepted before.
‘This isn’t about giving up on relationships, it’s about refusing to settle for the wrong one.’
