For more than two decades, one small detail from one of McLeod’s Daughters’ most emotional chapters has continued to puzzle devoted fans.
When Claire McLeod’s story came to its unforgettable end in 2003, the people closest to her were left to face an enormous goodbye. But amid all the emotion, one familiar face was quietly missing.
Becky Howard had already left Drovers Run by then, yet considering the relationship she had shared with Claire, many viewers expected her to return.
More than 20 years later, actress Jessica Napier has explained why that moment never happened — and her answer reveals that Becky’s absence was not necessarily the choice fans might have imagined.
Becky and Claire shared more than life at Drovers Run

Becky’s journey was closely tied to Claire, played by Lisa Chappell. Claire gave Becky an opportunity to build a new life at Drovers Run, and over time their relationship developed into one built on trust, loyalty and mutual respect.
For many viewers, Claire became much more than Becky’s employer.
She was a mentor and an important part of the young woman Becky gradually became.
That connection is what made Becky’s later absence so noticeable.
Jessica Napier left shortly before Claire’s final storyline

She left to begin a new chapter with Jake, with Jessica Napier later explaining that she had been young at the time and wanted to explore other opportunities rather than remain associated with one role for too long.
Her departure came only a few episodes before Claire’s storyline reached its devastating conclusion.
Jessica never returned to the series after leaving, even though several other familiar faces would come and go over the years.
But there was one particular moment when fans felt Becky surely would have returned.
One absence continued to puzzle fans

Because of everything Becky and Claire had been through together, viewers questioned why Becky was not there to say goodbye.
It was not simply the absence of another former character. Their history at Drovers Run made Becky’s disappearance from that chapter particularly difficult for some longtime fans to understand.
And according to Jessica, it is a question people have continued to ask her.
More than two decades after the storyline aired, she has now offered a surprisingly straightforward explanation.
Jessica Napier says she was never asked to return

She said she did not know exactly what was happening behind the scenes, but noted that both she and Lisa Chappell had decided to leave the show around the same period.
Jessica suggested the production may simply have regarded Becky’s storyline as already completed once she had departed.
For Jessica herself, however, the missed opportunity still carried some sadness.
She believed Becky unquestionably would have returned for Claire because of the friendship and respect that had existed between the two characters.
That simple explanation gives a very different meaning to a moment fans have questioned for more than 20 years.
Becky did not stay away because the bond between the characters had somehow disappeared.
The reunion simply never made it onto the screen.
Jessica believed Becky would have been there

“There was a lot of respect,” she told New Idea while reflecting on their friendship.
For viewers who followed Becky from her earliest days at Drovers Run, that may make her absence feel even more bittersweet.
Her character had arrived carrying plenty of uncertainty, but Drovers Run gradually became somewhere she could belong.
Claire played an important part in making that possible.
So even though audiences never saw Becky standing alongside the others during Claire’s farewell, Jessica’s comments offer something fans were missing at the time: confirmation that, from the character’s point of view, Becky would have wanted to be there.
The question has resurfaced as McLeod’s Daughters prepares to return
The old storyline has taken on fresh significance following news that McLeod’s Daughters is officially heading back to television.
Stan confirmed on September 17, 2026 that the Australian drama will return as a new Stan Original, revisiting the world first created by Posie Graeme-Evans.
Details surrounding the returning cast have not yet been announced.
For longtime fans, however, the announcement has already brought memories of Drovers Run — and the characters who once called it home — back into focus.
Becky Howard remains one of them.
Her departure happened more than two decades ago, but the question surrounding her absence from Claire’s goodbye endured far longer.
Now Jessica Napier’s explanation finally fills in part of that missing chapter.
And perhaps the most poignant detail is also the simplest: whatever happened behind the scenes, Jessica has little doubt about what Becky herself would have done.
She would have been there.
